Wow! The Overlook Trail at Lake Georgetown was a hidden gem. I fell in love before I even got to the park.
You drive north on I-35 from Austin, which is always soul crushing. You then exit one of the busiest exits in Georgetown and navigate down a road with lots of construction. Also soul crushing.
AND THEN! You turn right onto a country road that reminds me of my Grandma’s house. I was instantly at peace.

Driving up to the parking lot, I saw a few other cars and a gazebo, but no humans. It was a crisp 50 degree morning, so I threw on my sweatshirt, walked down the hill, and saw a gorgeous lake smiling back at me.
It was near heavenly perfection.

I proceeded to wander for about 2 hours by myself. At first timidly — am I supposed to go on this trail or that one? — and then eventually boldly — oh yes! this direction is better than that.
I loved every moment of this hike. There were trees, and tall grass, and rocks and mud. Plus stunning views of the lake the whole time.
It felt like a nature hug.
Which as the year ends is something I really needed.

My only regret was not eating beforehand. My desire for tacos outweighed my love of nature.
But I’ll back to this one! I only ended up walking 2 miles of the 7 miles available to me.
Note to self: pack a picnic next time.
