I had to take 2 weeks off from hiking because of awful shin splints. I went back out to Spicewood Valley trail and could barely make the 2 mile round trip.
So I diligently stretched, bought new insoles for my shoes, and mentally prepared myself for my first “big” hike of February.
I’ve hike the Bull Creek Greenbelt before. It’s actually where I had the epiphany to start this journey. But, I’d never started at the far north side of the trail, so this was all new territory for me.

At first, all I could think was how trashy the trail looked. It was muddy and covered in garbage. There were an astonishing amount of half-broken benches along the way.
About 20 minutes in, I legitimately considered turning around and just going home for the day. But, I continued because I know myself and this is a common habit of mine…
The first mile is always the hardest for me. My brain is full of clutter, my body is resisting the movement, and I always second-guess my motivations.
But, like clockwork, as I move from mile 1 to mile 2, my mind starts to clear up, my body gets in a groove, and I’m finally able to enjoy my surroundings.

Coincidentally, this magical moment on my hike happened right was I came up to the first highway underpass and realized I had finally made it to THE Bull Creek Falls.
I’ve seen these waterfalls in photos, but never put 2 and 2 together. I had no idea this is where they sat in Austin.
It was just perfect timing.
From there, the final 1 1/2 miles were a total joy. I waded through water, laughed at the dogs running past me, and fell into an easy stride.
I’m always so glad when I push through that first mile.
